Swedish prince. His name is spelled as per international 20th century usage; also however known as Gustav Adolf. He was of the Bernadotte Dynasty, Duke of West Bothnia from birth and father of future King Carl XVI Gustaf. His mother was a British princess. He was an avid sportsman and highly involved in scouting. Accusations have been leveled at him for Nazi synpathies in WW2, having been photographed with the likes of Adolf Hitler and Hermann Göring and with avowed Nazi Prince Charles Edward for a father-in-law, but nothing of the sort has ever been substantiated. He and Princess Sibylla first had four daughters, and the birth of their son in 1946 was a great relief to Swedish monarchists who had worried about the male line of the dynasty going extinct in a time when women could not inherit the throne. Prince Gustaf Adolf was killed not even a year later in the same plane crash near Copenhagen, Denmark, as American singer Grace Moore. The crash, officially proclaimed an accident, has been blamed on human error, but it has never been established by whom, and nobody was held responsible.
