US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served the State of Illinois' 3rd (1971 to 1973) and 2nd (1973 to 1981) Congressional Districts in the United States House of Representatives. After attending Catholic school, he received a Bachelor of Science degree from Northwestern University. Following service with the United States Marine Corps, he attained his law degree from DePaul University School of Law. During his tenure in Congress, Murphy fought passionately to combat the flow of illegal narcotics into the United States. He served on several Congressional committees and was a early supporter of gun control laws. After leaving Washington, he resumed practicing law.
