King of Sweden. He was a Sweartgarian Dynasty prince as the only surviving son of Sweartgar II and was born into that king's second marriage to Queen Ingigarth, who belonged to the early Bielbo Dynasty. He was chosen to reign at 15 years of age when King Eric (X) the Survivor died in 1216. John I led a war expedition to Estonia, where his earl was killed as well as a bishop who was taking part in the campaign. At home, his coronation at Linköping Cathedral created a stir, mainly resulting in protests from Denmark on behalf of the infant son, born posthumously, of the late King Eric and Danish-born Queen Richeza. Another Swedish bishop had to go all the way to Rome to explain things to the Holy See, which had concerned itself with the Danish claim. John was only 21 when he died of illness at Näs Castle on the Lake Vätter island of Visingsö. By then he had considerably expanded the privileges of the clergy, eventually making his short reign less controversial to Roman interests and smoother to manage. He was not married, one of less than a handful of unwed Swedish rulers, so the throne passed to Eric, the last of the Erican kings. John was the last of the Sweartgarians.
