Kansas Pioneer, 85, Plans Birthday

John Field, 25 Lenox St., once hitched his team to a prairie chooner [sic], drove to Kansas and built and lived in a sodhouse for five years.

Tomorrow, that pioneer, who struggled against drouth [sic], grasshoppers, blizzards, cyclones and coyotes, will celebrate his 85th birthday quietly at his home, facing nothing more dangerous that [sic] a possible snowstorm.

But he still has vivid memories, backed up by the deed to his quarter section signed by President Harrison. He came to Rochester 18 years ago to be with his children, two sons and two daughters.
