New York City Mayor. He graduated from Columbia College in New York City, New York, and became head of his family's sugar refining business. In 1845 he was elected Mayor of New York City, an office he would go on the hold three different time. Serving his first term from 1845 to 1846, he served for the second time from 1849 to 1850m then reentered business, becoming President of the Bank of North America and a large stockholder in coal, railroad and insurance companies. He narrowly lost a three way race for Mayor in 1859 to Daniel F. Tiemann. In the wake the Boss Tweed-Tammany Hall scandal, he became Vice President of the Committee of 70, a reform organization, and accepted the 1872 Republican nomination for Mayor. He defeated the Tammany Hall candidate to become Mayor for the third time, serving from 1873 until his death in 1874. He was often at odds with the Board of Aldermen, which did not approve of his reforms. Havemeyer died in his City Hall office after suffering a heart attack.
