Chilean Independence Leader. He was the leader of the Chilean rebel army that defeated Spanish forces. He proclaimed an independent Chile and subsequently became its first leader. He held dictatorial powers for his six year rule. He was deposed in 1823, and lived out the remainder of his life in exile in Lima, Peru.
