James H. Groves, 91, passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at Pine Crest Village, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

He was born November 10, 1924 in Chicago, the son of the late James and Marie (Folkerts) Groves. Jim served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII, where he was a gunner in the South Pacific. He often told stories of his passing through the Panama Canal five times. Jim graduated from Elgin High School and the DeVry Institute in Chicago. On October 5, 1946 he married Phyllus E. Wilson at First Presbyterian Church of Elgin, Illinois. He worked in the engineering department of Chicago Musical Instruments’ Lowery Organ division in Lincolnwood, Illinois, for 22 years until his retirement in 1982. Jim was proud that he had installed the organ speakers at Wrigley Field in Chicago during his tenure. He also had worked with Crest Photo Lab for 10 years.

Jim was an excellent bowler, hunter, golfer and loved fishing with his son. He loved star gazing, wintering in Naples and Lake Worth, Florida and spending summer vacations in his beloved Door County, Wisconsin. Jim loved children, was a good provider and caring family man.

Jim and Phyl lived most of their 69-year marriage in Elgin, Illinois, then moved to Watertown, Wisconsin in 2006, where they made many friends and enjoyed living at Marquardt Village. They moved to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, in September 2015.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllus; daughter, Deborah (Michael) Olesen of Sturgeon Bay; son, Steven (special friend, Linda Bock) Groves of Elgin, IL; granddaughter, Stephanie (Matthew) Olesen-Bute of San Jose, CA; sister-in-law, Mrs. Robert (Iris) Groves of Elgin, IL; brother-in-law, Ralph Thieman of The Villages, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, James and Marie Groves; four brothers, Robert, Richard, Marvin and Cloris Gene Groves; father and mother-in-law, Sid and Nellie Wilson; and sister-in-law, Nan Jean Thieman.

Private family services with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2016 at Pine Crest Village in Sturgeon Bay. The family requests no flowers.
