Hall of Fame Basketball Player. She was considered one of the greatest female basketball players in history during her amateur career. She attended George Peabody College for Teachers (now part of Vanderbilt University) and played basketball for the Amateur Athletic Union team sponsored by the Nashville Business College. She was an AAU All-American for fifteen years in a row from 1955 to 1969 and led her team to ten AAU championships during the same period. She was the Most Valuable Player of the AAU National Tournament nine times. In 1957 she led the United States national team to victory in the World Championships against the Soviet Union. For her AAU accomplishments, she was enshrined in to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999. Also Sports Illustrated for Women rated her 51st on the list of the century's greatest sportswomen.
