Religious Figure. He was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He studied for the priesthood at the Seminary of Angers where he was ordained in 1865. Ten years later, he obtained a doctorate in theology and cannon law in Rome. His first parish pastoral assignment was at Saint Lambert's in Angers, later being assigned as Chaplain of the Church of San Fuigi des Francais in Rome serving from 1873 until 1875. He then returned to the Diocese of Angers performing pastoral duties until November 5, 1887 when he was selected as Bishop of Bellay. In February of 1906 he was appointed Archbishop of Rheims and seven years later elevated to Cardinal by Pope Pius X. After the ceremony, he returned to Rheims and remained in Rheims throughout World War I where some of the worst fighting and bombings occurred. He was considered a hero to many, tending to the injured, sick and displaced as well as saying Mass whenever possible. The Cathedral at Rheims was destroyed during the war and during his tenure as Archbishop of Rheims he rebuilt the Cathedral, which was completed in 1927. In 1922 he took part in the conclave which elected Pope Pope Pius XI. He was buried under the main altar of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Rheims.
