Major League Baseball Player. For eight seasons (1947 and 1949 to 1955), he was a left-handed pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs. Raised in West Virginia, he attended Trap Hill High School and later served with the United States Navy in both the European and Pacific Theaters during World War II. Signed by the Reds as an amateur free agent in 1946, he marked his Major League debut on September 13, 1947 and pitched in three games that year. He gradually made his way into Cincinnati's starting rotation and produced two consecutive double-digit win seasons (1952 with 12 and 1953 with 12). In 184 career regular season games, he compiled a 33 win, 40 loss record with a 4.37 lifetime ERA. After retiring from baseball, he worked in law enforcement.
