Carmen Varela was the second youngest of four children, who were born to Josph Enrique Varela and Rosa Espinosa. She was born in Hermosillo, Mexico, and she immigrated to the United States with her family while her dad fought in the Mexican Revolution with Pancho Villa.

She grew up in Los Angeles, and in 1927 married Eugene Pedrin. They had three children (2 boys and 1 girl).

She settled in Phoenix, AZ due to asthma problems, and died there at 47 years old, leaving behind a family that missed her deeply.
