Richard's burial was registered in Louth, Lincolnshire, age 68, Jan 1874. Richard was appointed chaplain of Kirkdale Prison in 1839 on a salary of £300, he became well known as he worked with the inmates for many years and during this time he became a leader in prison reform. In 1842 Richard was married to Ellen Wagstaff(- 17th October 1890) 2nd daughter of Joseph Wagstaff and Ellen Stubbs of Grappenhall.

They had 8 children, all christened in Walton on the Hill:

Henry (1851),
Mary (1853),
Amelia (1855),
Elizabeth (1857),
Arthur (1859).

One of Richard's son's was,
Rev Richard Appleton Master of Selwyn College, Cambridge.
