Madeline (Madge) Elaine Phillips Faught Schlegel
1917-2015

Boise, Idaho – Madeline Faught Schlegel, 97, was welcomed into the loving embrace of our LORD and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, June 27, 2015, at Emerson House in Garden City. She was born at Red Lodge, Montana, on October 22, 1917 to parents Mary Ellen and Frank Phillips.
At an early age of 9, she and her mother cooked meals for the harvest crews on a chuck wagon at the neighboring farms. Her mother remarried in 1923 to Carl H. Foust, Sr. They moved to Hardin, Montana in 1930; she graduated from Hardin High School in 1935. Madge moved to Nampa with her family in 1936. Her high school sweetheart, Earl E. Faught, also moved to Nampa later that same year. Madge and Earl were married at Nampa Baptist Church on April 17, 1937. They both worked retail at Montgomery Wards in Nampa. In 1941, they had their first child, Cheryl. After moving to Boise in 1942, Carl was born September 24, then Kathy on October 17, 1945, and David Sr. on November 4, 1957.
Madge was a stay at home Mom being involved with Roosevelt Elementary School's PTA. She was also a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader. Earl and Madge were very involved with the building of the Log Cabin United Brethren in Christ Church on East Bannock. She played piano at the church, taught Sunday School, and was very active with the Women's Missionary Fellowship. They were active members there for many years.
Madge loved playing the piano, and Earl played the guitar and harmonica, both being self taught. There are many fond memories of Mom and Dad playing their foot tapping music together after dinner, and at family gatherings. They also loved to square dance. A large part of our family activities was to go camping and fishing, as well as helping at harvest time on 2 family farms.
She loved playing bridge and belonged to a bridge club that met monthly at The Mode Tea Room. They dressed to the nines, enjoyed tea and finger sandwiches while kibitzing, and playing their favorite game.
She worked for JC Penney's, Dr. Frank Crowe, and the Idaho Employment Department in Unemployment Claims.
Madge and Earl became members of the Boise First Baptist Church in 1957, and both were very active there in many capacities. Earl went on to be with our LORD on April 4, 1975. They had been married 27 years.
Five years later she met and soon married Wesley Schlegel, Sr. on December 7, 1980, combining our two families for a total of 9 children. Mom loved her extended family as much as her own; Wesley Jr., Carolyn Schlegel Morris, Tony, and Gerald Schlegel, and Dick Gohman. She received their respect and love as well. Madge and Wes both retired and were able to enjoy many years of golfing and RV trips throughout the Northwest, Southwest and Alaska. There weren't many golf courses left for them to explore in any of those areas. They also enjoyed meeting up with family members for a great time together at various campsites.
Entertaining family and friends was a joy to her. The more the merrier. She always loved to have lots of people around her especially for her great home cooked meals. The intense dominoes and pinochle games with family and friends were also dear to her heart.
Madge is survived by her children, Cheryl and David Faught of Boise, Kathy, and husband, Jack Humason of W. Richland, Washington. Stepchildren: Wesley Schlegel Jr. of Tacoma, Washington, Carolyn and husband, Raymond Morris of Anchorage, Alaska, Dick and wife, Pat Gohman of Salt Lake City, Utah, 5 grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Ellen Phillips Foust, her Father, Frank Phillips, Stepfather, Carl H. Foust Sr., husbands Earl E. Faught, and Wesley Schlegel, Sr., her brothers Jim Phillips, Carl Foust, Jr., David Garth Foust, her sister Esther Foust Grey, Stepsons, Tony and Gerald Schlegel, and her son, Carl Faught.
