He was promoted Principal Musician of the regiment on June 20, 1863 and was mustered out at Washington, DC on June 14, 1865.
The regiment performed garrison duty until they were ordered to Spottsylvania, VA to reinforce Grant's army. In the battle they had 8 killed and 21 wounded, at Cold Harbor they had 80 killed and 339 wounded and at Petersburg where their colonel was killed leading the charge 42 killed and 261 wounded. At the end of the war they had 14% killed in action.
Charles received an Army Invalid Pension for his service in the Civil War.
He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic Post #706 in Chicago, IL.
He died age 70 and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery.
