Loretta Maxine Moore Pepple, 79, rural St. Francisville, Missouri, died at 10:20 a.m., Sunday, September 17, 2000, at Fort Madison Community Hospital, Fort Madison.

She was born December 20, 1920, the daughter of Leonard Henry and Margaret Ahern Moore. She married Stanley Pepple Sr on June 19, 1944 in Kansas. He survives.

She was the sixth of eight children and grew up on the farm near St. Patrick Mo. and attended the Catholic School in St. Patrick where she graduated first in her class of 1939. She was awarded a full scholarship to Mount St. Scholastica but chose instead to stay close to home. She moved to Keokuk, where she was employed as Women's Forelady at Purity Oats. They lived briefly in Keokuk and moved to the farm at St. Francisville, where they lived for 55 years.

In the early 1960s she was employed as a ward clerk at St. Joseph Hospital, Keokuk. From 1983 to 1993, she was a toll keeper on the St. Francisville Bridge. For approximately 50 years, she was a correspondent for various local newspapers: The Clark County Courier, The Kahoka Gazette-Herald, The Daily Gate City and most recently, The Media. She was a member of St. Martha's Catholic Church, Wayland, Mo. and she donated many hours to a variety of organizations: St. Francisville Planned Progress, The Community Club, the Primrose Extension Club, the Frisky Friends 4-H Club and the St. Francisville Rebels 4-H Club.

For many years she worked as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society's annual crusade. Her volunteer work in school-related organizations continued until the last of her six children had graduated from college.

Besides her husband, she is survived by six children; one stepson; five grandchildren; three sisters; and one great-aunt.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, three brothers and one son-in-law.
