Major League Baseball Player, Coach. For seven seasons (1962 and 1964 to 1969), he was a pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds, California Angels and Chicago White Sox. Born Samuel Joseph Ellis, he played collegiate baseball at Mississippi State University, prior to being signed as an amateur free agent by Cincinnati in 1961. He made his Major League debut with the Reds on April 14, 1962 and pitched in eight games that season, but struggled with an elevated ERA. By 1965, he earned a spot in Cincinnati's starting rotation and produced a career-high 22 wins, as he achieved all star status that year. In 229 career regular season games, he compiled a 63 win, 58 loss record, with a 4.15 lifetime ERA. After retiring as a player, he served as a pitching coach with the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners and Baltimore Orioles.
