King of Northumbria, also spelled Oswiu or Oswio, who succeeded in making the majority of the Britons, Picts and Scots tributary to him. He consolidated his power with the aid of the Church and by a series of matrimonial alliances. In 655, he defeated Penda of Mercia at the Battle of the Winwaed, in thanksgiving for which he founded the Abbey of Whitby.
