Byron Vincent Leary of Marshfield, Brigadier General, U.S. Marine Corps, retired, died on May 17, 2016, at the age of 100. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy M. (Breau) Leary; loving father of Kevin J. Leary and his wife Brenda of Norfolk, Va., Peter V. Leary and his wife Johanna of Marshfield and Joseph T. Leary and his wife Roberta of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Patricia D. Hall and Kevin Doyle of Norwell; cherished grandfather of Robin L. Redford, Risa L. Jamison, Caroline C. Leary, Byron Vincent Leary II, Kimberly Hall-Allen, Robert S. Hall Jr., Kevin B. Hall; and great-grandfather of 10. He was predeceased by his 2 brothers. Byron was born in New Bedford, February 26, 1916, the son of the late John and Yvonne (Briere) Leary. He graduated from Boston College in 1938. Byron served with the United States Marine Corps, retiring as Brigadier General after 20 years of service. He was awarded the Legion of Merit and the Distinguished Flying Cross awards for his service as a fighter pilot in the South Pacific during World War II. Later, Byron served as Acting Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in Palestine. After retirement, Byron co-authored the book Arms Control Agreements. He was also a lobsterman in Marshfield and was the school librarian at Norwell Junior High School for 17 years. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Christine's Church in Marshfield, May 23, 2016, at 9 a.m. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Memorial donations in Byron's name may be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society in Arlington, Va.
