Presidential Cabinet Member. He studied engineering at Vanderbilt University, but did not graduate. Snyder was an Army lieutenant during World War I. During his service he met and became friends with Harry Truman. After the war he moved to St. Louis, where he was a member of the Army Reserve and worked in banking. In the early 1930s he began a career in government, serving as an executive in numerous New Deal agencies that worked to improve America's economy during the Great Depression. During World War II he was Director of the Office of War Mobilization and Reconversion, working first to ensure sufficient materiel production for the war effort, and then to reestablish a peace time economy. In 1946 President Truman appointed Snyder Secretary of the Treasury, an office he held until 1953. He earned accolades for stabilizing US finances by paying down the national debt and encouraging greater participation in the US Savings Bonds program. After leaving office Snyder was active in several philanthropic endeavors, including the Georgetown University Library's John W. Snyder Book Endowment Fund.
