Judge Goodwyn, Sr. was born in Robinson Springs, Elmore County, Alabama to Albert T. Goodwyn & Priscilla C. Goodwyn. He moved to Bessemer, Alabama around 1910, where he was an attorney. At this time, he was a boarder in the home of Mr. & Mrs. John G. Gaster. In the 1930 census, he is shown as a Judge in the Circuit Court. He was still listed in the census record of 1940 as a Judge. He was the great grandson of John Tyler, who was the 10th President of the United States. He came from a long line of political servants, and was well respected. He married Lora Pearl Williams Barkis, a widow, on August 21, 1907 in Marionville, Lawrence, Missouri.
