Roman Catholic Cardinal. Santiago de Chile born Carlos Oviedo Cavada received his first education at the Colegio San Pedro Nolasco and the Instituto de Humanidades Luis Campino in his native city before entering the Order of Mercy in Melipilla on January 28, 1944. Taking his simple vows on March 18, 1945 and his solemn vows on March 19, 1948, he studied at houses of studies of his Order, at the Theological Faculty of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he also frequenting the Sacred Congregations of the Council and of Religious as well as the Studium of the Sacred Roman Rota. Earning a licentiate in theology and a doctorate in canon law, he was ordained priest on September 24, 1949 at the metropolitan cathedral of Santiago de Chile. Named faculty member and spiritual director of the San Pedro Nolasco School, he formed part of the teaching staff of the Pontifical Catholic University of Santiago from 1953 until 1958, when he was selected to work at the general curia of his Order and to further studies in the Secret Vatican Archives. Director of the Theological Faculty of the named Pontifical Catholic University of Santiago between 1962 and 1963, he performed pastoral ministry in Santiago and also served as official in the archdiocesan curia as lawyer of the ecclesiastical tribunal, prosynodal examiner, visitor to women religious and book censor. Elected auxiliary for the archdiocese of Concepción by Pope Paul VI, he received his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Beneventum on June 7, 1964 from Archbishop Alfredo Silva Santiago at the basilica of La Merced in Santiago. Secretary of the Episcopal Conference of Chile between 1970 and 1974, Oviedo Cavada was promoted to the metropolitan see of Antofagasta on March 25, 1974. Apostolic administrator of the vacant prelature of Calama from 1974 until 1976, he acted as grand chancellor of the University of the North between 1976 and 1989. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Santiago de Chile on March 30, 1990, he served as grand chancellor of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile from 1990 till 1998. Member of the Chilean Academy of History, Pope John Paul II created him cardinal priest in the consistory of November 26, 1994 with the title of Santa Maria della Scala, deaconry elevated pro illa vice to title. Resigning the pastoral government of his archdiocese on February 16, 1998, the Cardinal succumbed to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis on December 7 that same year while recovered at the hospital of the Catholic University of Chile. Originally buried in his family's crypt in the Catholic Cemetery of Santiago de Chile, in 2006 his remains were transferred to the archbishopric crypt of the metropolitan cathedral of Santiago and reburied beside his predecessors.
