Claire Frederick "Fred" Wheelon took his final step of faith as he walked into the arms of Jesus on March 30, 2012 at the age of 95, at home with his loving family at his side. Fred was born in Salida, Colo. on Dec. 24, 1916 to Lorne Frederick and Martha Louise Wheelon. He graduated from Benson High School in Portland in 1934. He went on to study Civil Engineering at Oregon State University. Fred served during WWII as a First Lieutenant of the Army Air Corps. During his career, he worked as a carpenter on Bonneville and Grand Coulee Dams, interstate bridge construction, as well as other notable bridges (Freemont, Yaquina Bay Bridge).
Fred was very active in numerous charities and gave freely of his time to those in need. Fred was an active member of the Tigard Christian Church and played many leadership roles and led many carpentry/building maintenance projects. He was a tireless volunteer for numerous organizations including Medical Teams Northwest, Habitat for Humanity, Tillamook Burn and Mt. St. Helens forest restoration. He also helped build Tualatin Hills Christian Church and missionary camp in Japan. He shared life lessons to all through humor, honesty, hard work, strong faith in Christ and always sharing his bountiful garden. He will tenderly be missed by all who knew him.
Fred is survived by his wife of 68 years, Milladeana; children, Larry (Vonny), Dean, Kenneth, David (Sheryl), Jeff (Linda), Deborah Wheelon-DeWitt (Jay); 13 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
A special thanks to caregiver Joann Work, Hospice and the staff at Creekside Retirement Village. Their sensitive and loving care has been appreciated beyond words to Fred, Deana and their entire family.
A celebration of Fred's life will take place at Tigard Christian Church on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to Medical Teams International, SmileTrain or your favorite charity.
