Hall of Fame Professional Ice Hockey Player. In a career that spanned from 1946 to 1980, he became one of the greatest players in professional hockey history. He played twenty-six years with the Detroit Red Wings and Hartford Whalers of the National Hockey League, and six years with the Houston Aeros and New England Whalers of the short-lived World Hockey Association, amassing totals of 2,421 games played, 1,071 goals, 1,518 assists, and 2,589 points - all records at the time of his retirement. He was a four-time Stanley Cup champion, and was inducted into the National Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972.
