Professional Football Player. He was a defensive lineman for both the San Diego Chargers and Miami Dolphins of the American Football League from 1961 to 1966. He was an All-American at Indiana University, playing both offense and defense. Drafted by both the Detroit Lions of the National Football League and the AFL's San Diego Chargers in 1961, he chose to sign with the Chargers at the conclusion of the 1960 East-West Shrine Game. He was a member of the original "Fearsome Foursome" Chargers defensive line and was a standout player throughout his stay with the team, helping them win two AFL championships. He was both the AFL's Rookie of the Year and All-AFL in 1961. He missed the early portion of 1962 due to injury, but came back and in the following three seasons, made the AFL All-Star Game. On January 15, 1966 he, along with fellow defensive star Ernie Ladd, was traded to the Houston Oilers, but the trade was nullified. He ended up being released by the Chargers due to lingering back problems, and joined the expansion Miami Dolphins for the rest of the 1966 season. He ended up retiring from football after the season and briefly went into acting in television with appearances on such shows as the "The Beverly Hillbillies", "Kolchak: The Night Stalker", and "The Six Million Dollar Man". He later went into the education field as an educator and high school football coach. He was inducted into the San Diego Chargers Hall of Fame and was a part of their 50th Anniversary Team.
