Thornton was the son of Maurice Watson and Helen Thornton. On 11 May 1937 he married Cleopha Meiners and they had eight children: Deann, Jane, James, Thornton, Martha, Mary, Anthony and George. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the owner of Watson Shell Service Station. Thornton died at the age of 83.
