Virginia Anne Olmstead longtime fund-raiser for Scripps Clinic, 85
Virginia Anne Olmstead, whose longtime service to Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation ranged from assisting nurses to designing shirts for fund-raising, died Friday at Casa Palmera Care Center in Del Mar.
Mrs. Olmstead, 85, died after a long illness. Friends said her condition worsened after the Dec. 13 death of her husband of 63 years, retired Navy Lt. Cmdr. Harper Olmstead.
The Olmsteads had lived since the late 1930s in La Jolla, where they became well-known in social and fund-raising circles -- especially for their support of Scripps Clinic.
Mrs. Olmstead was a founding member in 1968 of the Scripps Clinic Auxiliary, which she served as president from 1972 to 1973.
She was the organization's historian for 20 years and joined her husband in the early 1970s in establishing an endowment fund designed to provide equipment for patient care and education.
Her fund-raising efforts included embroidering chambray work shirts with unique designs and selling them in the auxiliary's gift shop.
"Virginia was a very generous spirit," said longtime friend Carol Tuggey. "She entertained with style and was very aware of making her guests feel at home."
Mrs. Olmstead and her husband were founders of the county Orchid Society.
In the 1970s, they were invited by the State Department to be among the first group of American citizens admitted into China after relations were established by the Nixon administration.
Mrs. Olmstead was a member of the Circumnavigators, a group of world travelers dedicated to promoting international good will. She was active in the San Diego Opera Association and the San Diego Zoological Society.
A native of Pittsburgh, she attended the University of Southern California with her husband before moving to La Jolla.
The Olmsteads both grew up as the only child in their respective families. They had no children.
Mrs. Olmstead is survived by her friends and care givers, Robert and Carol Tuggey and Anne Marie Abbott, all of La Jolla.
Services are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. today at El Camino Memorial Park.
