Actor. Raised in Minnesota, he studied on the collegiate level in Illinois and later New York, with intentions of becoming a journalist. However, he gravitated towards acting and received a Theatre World Award the off-Broadway play "Little Mary Sunshine" (1959). He originated the role of 'Oscar' in the long running production of "Sweet Charity" (1966 to 1967) and repeated the role in the 1969 film adaptation. During the course of his extensive stage career, he received numerous Tony Award nominations and earned a Drama Desk Award for "Don Juan" (1973) and "The Great God Brown" (1973). His television career began during the early 1960s with a recurring role on the serial "As the World Turns". He would go on to appear in scores of programs including "Marcus Welby, M.D.", "Hawaii Five-O", "Falcon Crest", "Murder, She Wrote" and "Law and Order". Among his film credits include "All the President's Men" (1976), "Thieves" (1977) and "Brubaker" (1980).
