Roman Catholic Archbishop. Neapolitan born Lorenzo Schioppa was ordained priest for the archdiocese of his native city on April 18, 1891. Entering the diplomatic service of the Holy See, he served as auditor to Msgr. Cesare Orsenigo at the apostolic nunciatures of Germany and the Netherlands and successively as chargé d'affaires at the nunciatiure of Hungary, before being appointed nuncio in Hungary by Pope Benedict XV on August 20, 1920, receiving his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Mocissus two days later from Cardinal Andreas Frühwirth OP., in Rome. Appointed apostolic internuncio in Netherlands on May 3, 1925 and furthermore in Lithuania on March 10, 1927, diving times between both countries before eventually resigning the Lithuanian post on May 27 of the following year, he carried his duties in the Netherlands up to his death. Decorated through the years with numerous honoreficences, his distinctions include those of knight second class of the Merit Order of St. Michael of Bavaria and of the Order of the Crown of Prussia; knight of the Sacred Constantinian Military Order of St George; the grand crosses of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas and of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary; grand officer of the Order of Christ; the cross of merit of the Dutch Red Cross and knight of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Passing suddenly away in The Hague at nine in the morning aged sixty three, his elegantly prepared bier was laid out in one of the rooms of the papal legation in Bezuidenhout as of the same day of his passing. Given a national funeral with full military honors, his funeral was one of the greatest the city of Den Haag ever saw across the course of the twentieth century, with a pompous and solemn cortege passing its streets and requiem mass celebrated at Sint-Jacobuskerk of Parkstraat accompanied by Mendelssohn's "Marche Funèbre".
