Author, Historian. He shall be remembered for his penning of the novel "The Rise of the West: A History of the Human Community" (1963), which earned him a National Book Award, in addition to bestseller status. He was widely regarded as an expert on the history of the Western Civilization and was a driving force in shaping the way History is studied academically. His father was a Presbyterian minister and historian of Calvinism, William was raised in Toronto and later Chicago. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Chicago and was proceeding to attain a Doctorate from Columbia University, when World War II intervened. Following his induction into the United States Army, he was initially stationed at Pearl Harbor weeks after the attack by the Japanese. He was later assigned to Curacao, Egypt and Greece, where he attained the rank of lieutenant colonel and was placed in command of an artillery battalion. Upon his return home, he concluded his studies and began a forty-year career as a professor of History at the University of Chicago. He penned twenty books including "Plagues and People" (1976) and was the recipient of the National Humanities Award from President Obama in 2010.
