He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Chicago and was proceeding to attain a Doctorate from Columbia University, when World War II intervened. Following his induction into the United States Army, he was initially stationed at Pearl Harbor weeks after the attack by the Japanese. He was later assigned to Curacao, Egypt and Greece, where he attained the rank of lieutenant colonel and was placed in command of an artillery battalion. Upon his return home, he concluded his studies and began a forty-year career as a professor of History at the University of Chicago. He penned twenty books including "Plagues and People" (1976) and was the recipient of the National Humanities Award from President Obama in 2010.
