Mr. Griffin grew up in Brooklyn and also lived in Ozone Park, Queens, before moving to Long Island. During World War II, he served in the Pacific in the U.S. Navy Construction Battalion known as the "Seabees," attaining the rank of chief petty officer. Shortly after the war, he went to work for Con Ed in the Stations Construction and Shop Department at the Astoria plant until his retirement in 1978.

Mr. Griffin lived in Valley Stream from 1946 to 1978. He moved to a summer home in Hampton Bays, where he lived until moving to Farmingdale about five years ago.

He was a charter member of the Father Thomas Carroll Council 4566, Knights of Columbus, in Valley Stream, and the Valley Stream Fire Department Engine Company No. 3.

Mr. Griffin was a member of the widows' and widowers' group of St. Kilian Roman Catholic Church in Farmingdale and was grand marshal of its St. Patrick's Day Dance last month. Mr. Griffin and his wife, Margaret, had been married 45 years when she died in 1984.
