Organized Crime Figure. One of the last to hold the title 'Boss of all Bosses', he was for several years the undisputed Godfather of the Sicilian Mafia. Raised in the hometown of the fictional Don Vito Corleone, he got his start as a local gangster and was instrumental in reorganizing the Sicilian Mafia after it was severely damaged in a war with the government. He participated in a series of Mob wars and was called 'The Tractor' because he 'mowed people down' with a machine gun, though, interestingly, he was also considered much less bloodthirsty than many of his associates. Beginning his career just after World War II, he associated himself with Luciano Leggio, rival of Sicilian Godfather Michele Navarra. He worked his way thru the ranks and when Don Michele was rubbed-out in 1958 and Don Luciano became Godfather, Mr. Provenzano moved up with him. Accused in the 1963 hit on a Navarra Family member, he went into hiding for the next 43 years, his power in no way lessened by his behind-the-scenes status. When Don Luciano went up the river in 1974, Salvatore Riina became Godfather with Mr. Provenzano as his Consigliere. During the 1980s and 1990s, he ran the Organization's finances from a luxury villa near Palermo, rebuilding the Mob's fortunes and earning a second nickname, 'The Accountant'. When Don Salvatore was sent up for life in 1993 for the 1992 assassination of Prosecutor Giovanni Falcone, Don Bernardo became Godfather and immediately established his position with a number of high-profile bombings including that of the Uffizi Art Gallery. Gradually the net tightened and he was forced to hide out in Corleone, using an old farm house his headquarters while moving among a series of shacks every few days, his control exercised via notes written in a Bible-based code. When finally run-to-ground in 2006, he cryptically told the agents "You have no idea what you've done", which might be interpreted "I was providing stability. Now see what happens...". Afflicted with a number of serious health problems, he remained mentally sharp and never cooperated with investigators; Don Bernardo died of bladder cancer in a maximum security prison hospital facility.
