Minnesota Governor, US Senator. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the 33rd Governor of the State of Minnesota from 1971 until 1976. He served as a United States Senator from the State of Minnesota from 1976 until 1978. He received his law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School and during his collegiate years, he distinguished himself athletically as a member of the 1956 United States Olympic Hockey Team which captured a silver medal. Following service as an infantry officer with the United States Army, Anderson entered the political arena, when he was elected to and served in the Minnesota House of Representatives (1959 to 1963) and later the Minnesota State Senate from 1963 to 1971. He became the youngest Governor of Minnesota at the age of thirty-seven, when he was elected in 1970 and during his tenure, he will be remembered for prioritizing education and making poorer districts in the state become more even with more advantaged districts. At the height of his popularity, he earned the cover of Time Magazine in 1973. Anderson succeeded Walter Mondale as the United States Senator from Minnesota, when Mondale became Vice President under Jimmy Carter. After leaving Washington, he returned to private law practice. Anderson died of complications from Alzheimer's disease.
