Professional Football Player, Coach. For eight seasons (1954 to 1961), he played at the defensive end, defensive tackle, middle guard, guard and tackle positions in the National Football League with the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles. Born Francis Marion Campbell, he made his initial mark on the football field at the University of Georgia. Selected by San Francisco during the fourth round of the 1952 NFL Draft, the beginning of his professional football career was delayed as he served two years with the United States Army. After he was acquired by Philadelphia, he distinguished himself when he earned Pro-Bowl honors twice (1959 and 1960), in addition to experiencing a world championship with the 1960 NFL Champion Eagles. He compiled 94 career regular season games. After retiring as a player, he began a lengthy career as a coach and had stints with the Boston Patriots, Minnesota Vikings and Los Angeles Rams, prior to serving as defensive coordinator with the Atlanta Falcons from 1969 to 1974. Campbell succeeded his former Eagles' teammate Norm Van Brocklin as the Falcons' head coach in 1974, but produced three futile years and was fired during the 1976 season. He joined the Philadelphia Eagles' staff as defensive coordinator under head coach Dick Vermeil and directed the defensive during their capturing of the NFC Title in 1980, resulting in a Super Bowl appearance. He succeeded Vermeil as Eagles' head coach (1983 to 1985), but failed to achieve a winning record and was dismissed prior to the last game of the 1985 season. He returned to Atlanta in 1986, as the Falcons' defensive coordinator and succeeded Dan Henning as head coach (1987 to 1989). However, he failed to produce a winning year and was fired during the 1989 season.
