Vernon died in an aircrash while serving as a Lt. (jg) in the U.S. Navy
Reserve. His aircraft hit an iceberg off the coast of Greenland. He was
buried in Greenland for the duration of WW II and, after the war,
reburied in Salem, Virginia.

Graduated from Roanoke College, Roanoke, Va in 1938. Employed at Appalachian Electric Company before entering the service. Earned his wings at the Naval Air Base, Pensacola, Florida class 4C-41-P (C)
