Religious Leader. An evangelical Christian Pastor and author, he is best known for the best-selling apocalyptic fiction series Left Behind, based on the Christian pretribulation view (Rapture) of the events described in the Biblical books of Daniel, Ezekiel, Isaiah, and Revelation, written with his co-author Jerry Jenkins.

After military service as a gunner in the United States Army Air Corps over Europe during World War II, he received his BA from Bob Jones University in 1950 and the Doctor of Ministry Degree from Western Seminary. He served as Pastor of Scott Memorial Church in San Diego for almost a quarter of a century before turning to politics and writing. He encouraged Jerry Falwell to start the Moral Majority and was involved in a number of presidential campaigns.

In the early 1990s, he began writing his popular "Left Behind" series with his co-author Jenkins. The first book, by the same name, appeared in 1995. Books 7, 8, and 10 in the series reached No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list. The series was later turned into a series of films beginning in 2000. He was also the author of a number of nonfiction Christian books. He was named one of the 25 most influential evangelical leaders in the United States by Time magazine in 2007.
