David was the second of two children born to Hiram Peck and Jane More Peck. His father died when he was three years old and his mother’s second husband, Dr. Samuel Howell, assumed responsibility for raising him. Dr. Howell died when David was eight years old and his mother’s third husband, Abraham Hoagland, assumed responsibility for raising him. David married to Margaret Grant Hughes on 1 April 1854 at Hobart. They made their home at that place where David was first engaged in the foundry and machine business and later as a merchant. In 1862, the family relocated to California. David’s brother, John, had made a fortune at San Francisco as a wholesale grocer and needed his brother’s help with his business. David was remembered as social and genial, free-hearted and liberal, a good conversationalist, and full of enterprise and business ability. David and Margaret were the parents of six children; John Hughes Peck, Edwin Peck, Helen Elizabeth Peck, Orrin Peck, William Chauncey Peck, and Janet M. Peck.
