John was the first of six children born to David More Peck and Margaret Grant Hughes Peck. He was raised at Hobart where his father was first a foundry moulder and later a merchant. The family relocated to San Francisco, California in 1862 where a paternal uncle resided. John suffered a gunshot while on a hunting trip at Clear Lake near Clearlake. Clearlake is about 100 miles north of San Francisco and is, today, a popular place to fish and to hunt waterfowl. John had not married.
