Sarah Elizabeth BURCH was the daughter of William BURCH and Susan Storm. She was part of a large family and had six siblings who lived to adulthood. Her father was a farmer in Indian Creek Township, Monroe County.

When Sarah was 19 she married Thomas James CARTER. Thomas was a 27 year old farmer who had been widowed. He had two children by his previous marriage. Together Sarah and Thomas had seven more children:

Ollie Ethel Carter 1891 – 1979
William Harley Carter 1893 – 1966
Lottie Opal Carter 1895 – 1896
Amos Asbury Carter 1896 – 1976
Minnie Emiline Carter 1898 – 1918
Roy Jennings Carter 1900 – 1971
Lucy Avada Carter 1902 – 1963

Some of the children died young. Both her daughter, Lottie Opal, and her ten-year-old step-son died in the same year.
Her husband Thomas died in 1904 at the age of 41.

Two years later, Sarah married Martin Wilson MAY, a widower with seven children. Sarah was 36 at the time of the marriage and Martin was 39. Together they had three more children:

Lewis Erwin "Pete" May 1910 – 1983
Rowena Pearl May 1913 – 1961

Elizabeth was a member of the Walker's Chapel congregation. She died in 1940 at the age of seventy and was buried in Carmichael Cemetery beside her first husband.
