Former Sheriff Dead at 78

Norman M. Berkedal of 611 Reed Ave., Manitowoc, former Manitowoc County sheriff, and a member of the Manitowoc County Board of Supervisors for one term from the city's Second Ward, died Monday evening at Family Heritage Nursing Home, Manitowoc. He was 78.

Berkedal was born at Manitowoc Jan. 14, 1896, and resided in the county all his life. He served in two military campaigns with the U.S. Army, one at the Mexican border and the other in France. He received the Silver Star for gallantry in action in France. He was a captain of the guard force at Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc. during World War II and during 15 years prior to his retirement was sales representative for Kingsbury Breweries Co. He also worked for the Manitowoc Seating Co. and J.J. Stangel Hardware Co.

Berkedal was active in veterans' organizations. He was a member and past commander of the Otto Oas Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member and past vice commander of the Drews-Bleser Post, American Legion. He also belonged to the Last Man's Club, Sea Gulls, American Federation of Musicians Union, Eagles Aerie No. 706, United Commercial Travelers and the Men's Club of First Lutheran Church.

He served as sheriff from 1937 until 1941. He was elected a county board supervisor in 1963 and served one term. He was a member of the Aeronautics Committee. Berkedal used to lead the old Lyric Orchestra and Berke's Blue Birds. He was also director of the Legion Band.

Berkedal married the former Delia Seibling Feb. 3, 1925.

Funeral services will be Wednesday.

Norman M. Berkedal, 78, of 611 E. Reed Ave., Manitowoc, died Monday evening at Family Heritage Nursing Home, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Chapel, Manitowoc. The Rev. Theodore Vinger will officiate and burial will be in Knollwood Memorial Gardens, Town of Kossuth. Military graveside services will be conducted by American Legion Drews-Bleser Post No. 88 of Manitowoc.

Mr. Berkedal was born Jan. 14, 1896, at Manitowoc, son of the late Teryje and Mattie Olsen Berkedal. He attended school at Rockwood and was a World War 1 veteran. He married Delia Seibling Feb. 3, 1925, at Manitowoc, residing at Manitowoc all their lives. Mr. Berkedal was a Manitowoc County sheriff from 1937 through 1940. He was also a county board supervisor of the second ward of the City of Manitowoc. He was a member of the American Legion Band for many years and had his own Lyric orchestra for 13 years. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Eagles Aerie No. 706, American Legion Drews-Bleser Post No. 88, VFW Otto-Oas Post, United Commercial Travelers, Musicians Union and Last Man's Club.

Survivors include his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Janet) Pauly, of Manitowoc; two brothers, Olaf and Edward, of Manitowoc; a sister, Mrs. Clarence Gesell, of Two Rivers; three grandchildren; a great grandchild and nieces and nephews. A brother preceded him in death.

Friends may call at Jens Funeral Home, Manitowoc, from 7 to 9 o'clock this Tuesday evening until 11 a.m. Wednesday and at the chapel from noon until the time of service. Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church or Holiday House.
