US Congressman from New York. He completed his education at schools in Connecticut and moved to Yates County, New York, where he became a farmer in partnership with one of his brothers. In 1820 he served as Town Supervisor of Benton, Yates County. He later moved to Hammondsport in Steuben County, where he owned and operated a mill. He held several local offices, including New York Assemblyman in 1835 and Justice of the Peace in 1838. In 1838 he was elected to the US House as a Democrat and served one term, 1839 to 1841. He did not run for reelection, and returned to his Hammondsport businesses. He later moved to Batavia, Illinois, where he built a dam, mills and machine shops in partnership with his son in law.
