Singporean Statesman. He served as the sixth President of Singapore from September 1, 1999 to August 31, 2011. He received his primary education at the Anglo-Chinese Primary School and Rangoon Road Afternoon School, and his secondary education at Victoria School. He started working before completing his studies. During the Japanese occupation of Singapore, Nathan worked for the Japanese Civilian Police as a translator. After the war, whilst working, he completed his secondary education through a correspondence course with Wolsey Hall, Oxford, and then entered the University of Malaya where he graduated in 1954 with a Diploma in Social Studies (Distinction). He began his long career in the Singapore Civil Service in 1955 as a medical social worker. He would go on to serve in different government posts until deciding to run for the presidency of Singapore in 1999. He won the presidential election and took office on September 1, 1999. In 2005 he was re-elected to a second term and served until 2011 when he decided to retire due to his age. In 2009 he became the longest serving president in Singapore's history. He passed away after suffering a stroke three weeks before.
