Professional Football Player. He played college football at the University of Nebraska from 1931 until 1933. After college he signed with the Chicago Bears where he would play quarterback in the backfield with future Hall of Famers, Bronko Nagurski and Red Grange. In 1937 he was named to the All NFL Second Team and in 1940 was named to the Pro Bowl. He played his entire career with the Bears finishing with 3366 total passing yards and 35 touchdowns. He retired from professional football after the 1940 season returning to Nebraska where he became the head football coach. After two losing seasons at Nebraska he was hired as an assistant coach at Stanford University where he was the quarterback coach. In 1942 he enlisted in the Navy serving as an assistant coach from 1942 to 1945. He played his entire career with the Bears, then known as the "Monsters of the Midway," and while there achieved a record of 50-19-3 and was in three NFL championship playoff games. He was inducted into the Nebraska Hall of Fame in 1977. He last worked as the athletic director of the St. Andrews school in Chicago and while in the gym was stricken with a heart attack and died on the way to the hospital.
