KATHLEEN V. RYAN, WIDOW OF ATHLETE - NEEDHAM Mrs. Kathleen Ryan, RN, 71, 248 Grove St., widow of John C. (Blondy) Ryan,
one of the greatest athletes ever produced in Lynn, and a former resident of Swampscott, died Wednesday in Newton-Wellesley
Hospital after a lengthy illness.
She was one of the first nurses ever hired as a stewardess by United Airlines. She was a native of Belmond, Iowa, and was a graduate
of the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago.
Her husband played shortstop for the New York Giants, helping to spark the club to victory in the 1933 World Series. He was an outstanding
football, basketball and baseball player for three years at Lynn Classical High before going on to Holy Cross where he was a leading forward
passer. Mrs. Ryan leaves two daughters, Mrs. Philip J. (Joan Kathleen) Harney of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. Real O. (Sheila) Roy of Needham,
with whom she resided; a son, Sgt. John Barry Ryan of the Air Force in Alaska; two sisters, Mrs. Roy (Gladys) Henderson of Iowa and
Mrs. Charles (Pearl) Gaffney of Connecticut, and several grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Saturday morning from her daughter's home, 348 Grove St., Needham, with a funeral Mass at 9 in St. John the Evangelist
Church, Swampscott. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Lynn.
