(This is what I have received from my family. John J. was my Great-Great Grandfather.)John J. Scoggins son of Thuston or Hudson and Sophia Scoggins was born 1822. John J. was a Private C.S.A. Muster Roll Co. K. 6th Regiment, Ga. Volunteer Army of Tennessee, Oglethorpe County, Gilmer Blues. This was an infantry regiment of foot soldiers. John J, Scoggins, Private enlisted Yorktown, Va, 6 of July 1861 by Col. Colquitt. He went on furlough 21st of Jan. 1862. He had 25 days in Lexington, Ga. On the 3rd of September 1862 he came down with chronic diarrhea and died the 15th or 17th in General Hospital, Richmond, Va. His possessions were=1 pair shoes, 1 pair pants, 1 jacket,1 hat. Claim for the deceased soldier's register was filed 9th of February 1863.
Mary M. Scoggins reported 27th June 1864. There was amount of $121.50. John was burried in Richmond, Va. John and Mary were members of Millstone Baptist Church in Oglethorpe Co., Georgia. Mary was born 22nd. of Feb. 1824 and died 11th of April 1900. Mary was burried at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetary, Elbert county, Georgia Her son Joseph Warren Scoggins is burried beside her.
As of today 8/30/ 2016 there is no marker for him at Pleasant Grove Baptist church near Bowman, Ga. John J. and Mary Melissa Broach married in 1839.
Children of John and Mary are: 1).Elizabeth Jane Scoggins b.january 1840, SC. 2).(my g-grandfather Joseph Waerren Scoggins b. February 22, 1842, died January 22, 1922, Royston, Franklin county, Ga. 3). William Scoggins b.about 1844. Only information on him he enlisted 28 May in the same regiment (6th) later, absent, detached as a carpenter. (Incomplete record) William's widow was Mary A. Scoggins. William is thought to be relative of John J. Scoggins. 4). Sarah Louisa Scoggins b.19th December 1846 died 6th of February 1939, Bowman, Elbert county, Ga. 5). Martha A. Scoggins b. February 1850. 6). George Scoggins born about 1855. 7). Napoleon Scoggins born about 1859.
