He was the son of John Hagel and Elizabeth Haas. He attended elementary school in Ashley, McIntosh co., North Dakota. His military registration card of 5 June 1917 describes Fred at age 24 as: Tall height, medium build, gray eyes, light-brown hair.
Fred was the husband of Mabel Irene Pendray. Fred's occupation was county tax collector. He and his wife died in a car accident on Highway 12 and 83 just west of the old Kost Oil Station at the west edge of Selby. Fred was dead at the scene when officers arrived. His obituary states that he was survived by one sister, Mrs. John Mittleider of Herreid. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1926, his father in 1948 and one sister, Lydia Volzke, in 1952.
