James met his future wife, Gladys, at Taylor University, and they were married in 1929. They then served churches in Illinois, Iowa - notably St. John’s United Methodist Church, Davenport, and, Wesley United Methodist Church, Worcester, Massachusetts. Dr. Uhlinger often said these were “their” churches (not “his”) in tribute to his wife’s partnership in ministry there. Gladys was also active in community work including the Davenport (Iowa) Women’s Club and the YMCA/YWCA. She was a delegate to the World Methodist Conference in London, England.

It was suggested by a friend of Jim's that if St. Peter needed a break from his duties at the pearly gate, that Jim Uhlinger would be a good stand-in...such were his abilities to welcome the newcomer, be a friend to all and create a warm and comfortable atmosphere for everyone. He had developed these pastoral skills serving churches for nearly 24 years. A good role model for younger ministers, he was very approachable and interested in people. Besides having the gift of oratory and the ability to craft interesting and thoughtful sermons, he was a skilled pastoral counselor.

Always active on the conference level, he was a delegate to several Jurisdictional and General Conferences, as well as to the World Methodist Peace Tour that went to Russia in 1959. Other trips took them to the Far East, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, and to Europe several times.

After his term as District Superintendent in the New England Conference, in 1972, they retired to Florida. They were active members of the Methodist Church in Clearwater for 30 years. In every place they lived in Florida, he was the “unofficial chaplain”, the planner of activities, programs, and services.
