Actor. Born Hugh Charles Krampe, he was well known for his starring roles on the ABC television series "The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp" from 1955 to 1961. He was also well known for his role on the NBC television series "Search" from 1972 to 1973. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1943 and at seventeen, became the youngest drill instructor. After World War II, he enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he was discovered by actress Ida Lupino and signed to be in the film "Never Fear". This led to him being signed to a contract with Universal Pictures. In 1955 he was chosen to play the famed western lawman Wyatt Earp on the television series "The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp". The show became very popular and aired for the next six seasons. He would later reprise the role in several films and television series. He would go to appear in television series such as "The Virginian", "Perry Mason", "The Greatest Show on Earth", and "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour" before starring in "Search" from 1972 to 1973. His later television credits included "Charlie's Angels", "Police Story", "Fantasy Island", "Matt Houston", and "Murder, She Wrote". He also appeared in many films during his career with such credits as " The Shootist" (1976), "Twins" (1988), "Ten Little Indians" (1965), "In Harm's Way" (1965), and "Game of Death" (1978). For his work in the television industry, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and in 1992 was inducted in to the Western Performers Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was the founder of the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY), a non-profit youth leadership development program for high school scholars. Besides HOBY, he also was a co-founder of the Thalians, a show business charitable organization formed in 1955 to raise money for children with mental health problems.
