Lifetime Manistique, Michigan resident Benjamin R. Multhaupt, 96, died August 19, 2016 in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

He was born November 3, 1919 in Manistique, the son of Edward and Mina (LaTulip) Multhaupt and attended Manistique area schools. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater.

On January 18, 1943 he married the former Eleanore M. Bates in Toledo, Ohio. They made their home and raised their family in Manistique. Eleanore preceded him in death on January 7, 2013.

In his earlier years, Ben was employed as a Fuller Brush salesman and by the U.S. Postal Service. He and Eleanore owned and operated Multhaupt’s Hardware in Manistique from 1947-1960 and Ben later became the area sales representative for the Electrolux Company until his retirement.

He was an active member of the St. Francis de Sales Church where he served as usher. He was a member and former Grand Knight of the Knight of Columbus Council #2026 of Manistique and also a member of the Donald E. Messier Fourth Degree Assembly #502. He was one of the founders of the local St. Vincent de Paul Store and was also one of the original members of the C.B.C. Committee where he headed the kitchen crew for 40 years.

Ben is survived by his children, Diane M. Carlson of Manistique, Ronald (Carol) Multhaupt of Clarkston, MI, Debbe (Dennis) St. Pierre of Manistique, Rande (Laurel) Multhaupt of Grand Forks, ND, and Dore (David) Miljour of Shepherdstown, WV; 15 grandchildren, Michele (Daniel) Davis, Melanie (Rick) del Rosario, Mandy (Ryan) Moebius, Matthew (Diane) Carlson, Ronnie (Carol) Multhaupt, Richard (Rita) Multhaupt, Nicolas (Danielle) Multhaupt, Cory St. Pierre, Jamie (Kurt) Russell, Randy St. Pierre, Toni (Paul Gibbs) St. Pierre, Brande (Mark) Schiller, Dustin Multhaupt, Jesse Multhaupt, Ben Miljour; 22 great grandchildren, Cris Reid, Danny Davis, Nicole Davis, Stevie Davis, Jacqlyn del Rosario, Kara del Rosario, Tyler del Rosario, Kaitlyn Moebius, Isabelle Moebius, Shawn Carlson, Marcell Carlson, Leyla Carlson, Logan Multhaupt, Gavin Multhaupt, Graci Multhaupt, Cash Multhaupt, Jaron Russell, Mylah Russell, Trevor Hase, Maizie Schiller, Benjamin Schiller, and Henry Schiller; one great-great grandchild, Cris Reid, Jr.; along with several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Francis, Leonard, and Kenneth Multhaupt; and his sisters, Genevieve Longpre, Jeanette Gildner, and Loretta Irish.

Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 pm, Friday, August 26, 2016 at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. A veteran’s memorial ritual will be held at 5:00 pm, a K. of C. Rosary will be recited at 6:00 pm, and a time of remembrance, reflection, and prayer will be held at 7:00 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am, Saturday, August 27, 2016 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Manistique with Father Ben Paris officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery at Manistique.
