Nicholas J. Bellezza of Westerleigh, a retired New York state police officer and decorated World War II paratrooper, died Thursday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. He was 92.

Born in Port Richmond, he moved to Westerleigh in 1945.

Mr. Bellezza graduated from Port Richmond High School.

A paratrooper in a U.S. Army Airborne division, Mr. Bellezza served in World War II for four years, seeing duty in France, the Rhineland and Naples, Italy. He took part in the fierce Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes forest, and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged in 1945 as a sergeant.

He then became a New York state trooper, policing the former Willowbrook State School, until his retirement in the 1970s.

Mr. Bellezza was fond of tinkering with electrical projects, gardening, fishing and taking road trips.

His wife of 56 years, the former Mildred Tricarico, died in 2001.

The funeral service will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the Meislohn-Silvie Funeral Home, Port Richmond. Burial of ashes will be in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
