Botanist, Naturalist. A native of Valencia, Spain, he was the leading Spanish botanist of the 18th century. He lived in Paris from 1777 to 1781 and later he settled in Madrid. He named many plants, and his name is abbreviated as Cav. on botanical records. In his last years, Cavanilles was the director of the Botanic Garden in Madrid. His works include "Observaciones sobre la Historia Natural, Geografía, Agricultura, Población y Frutos del Reino de Valencia," "Icones et Descriptiones Plantarum Quae Aut Sponte in Hispaniae Crescunt, aut in Hortis Hospitantur," "Glosario de Botánica en Cuatro Lenguas," "Historia Natural de las Islas Canarias" and "Las Bodas de las Plantas."
